Intel sells its XScale Line to Marvell

Intel

Rumours that Intel was looking to sell its Xscale mobile processor division began flying in earnest earlier this month. The rumours have turned into reality and Intel has announced the sale of the division to the Marvell Technology Group for about $600 million USD. While Marvell works out new manufacturing arrangements, Intel will continue to produce the chips.

The sale, expected to close within the next few months, includes both the PXA270x chip found in many Smartphones and Pocket PC handhelds as well as the PXA9xx processor found in the BlackBerry 8700.

Intel will be focusing on its core microprocessor business and wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and WiMAX broadband.
