Warner Brothers has announced that it will begin to support Sony’s UMD format with some new releases, including The Dukes of Hazzard (December 6), Batman Begins and Constantine (December 20). A total of 8 movies with retail prices between $20 USD and $30 USD will be released in the first wave.
With 10 UMD movies having sold more than 100,000 copies so far and Sony expecting that PSP sales will reach 5 million units by the end of the year, it makes sense that movie studios are suddenly interested in this format. This is especially true given that studios have found that there are people out there willing to buy both UMD and DVD copies. Personally, I refuse to tie myself down to a format supported by a single device and/or manufacturer.
This announcement leaves DreamWorks as the only major studio not to support UMD.
