Samsung has developed a prototype for a flexible panel that measures 5 inches across the diagonal. Rather than the conventional glass panel, this uses a plastic backing thin enough that it can be bent. Two other advantages are lighter weight (the prototype weighs 0.8 ounces or one third of a glass-backed LCD panel) and better robustness. The panel has a quarter SVGA (400 pixels by 300 pixels) resolution.
Although the first practical uses are expected to be PDAs, notebooks and other portalbe electronic products, Samsung is already thinking of new areas where it could be used: helmets, glasses and other fashion accessories.
Expect to see the first products using these screens on the market in 2007.
